Desk work can feel physically quiet, but long hours of sitting still place real demands on your body. The World Health Organization recommends that adults limit the amount of time spent being sedentary and replace sedentary time with physical activity where possible. Australian movement guidelines also recommend breaking up prolonged periods of sedentary behaviour as often as possible.

What happens to your lower body when you sit for hours

Because the calf muscles help support circulation when they contract, long periods without movement can leave the feet, ankles and legs feeling stiff, heavy or slow to wake up when you finally stand. You do not need a complicated routine to start. A few minutes can be enough to shift your body from stillness into movement. Try this simple reset during your workday:

  • 30 seconds: ankle pumps or ankle circles
  • 30 seconds: toe splay or toe lifts
  • 45 seconds: slow calf raises
  • 45 seconds: standing hip or calf stretch
  • 60 seconds: short walk, stair walk or standing posture reset

Keep it comfortable. Avoid forcing range. If anything feels sharp, painful or unusual, stop and seek professional advice.
